Sam's new website

Hello world!

Due to the increasing censorship in major social media platforms, I decided to start my own website, where I am in full control of the stuff that gets posted here. I don't really post hateful stuff myself, nor anything that can be misconstrued as hateful, nor I subscribe to conspiracy theories and fringe ideologies. However, I still disagree with the overly vague “community guidelines” and social policing that are increasingly weaponized against my values.

So, it's the eve of Christmas 2022, and I'm just about to wrap up the setting up of my website. Merry Christmas!—for the one or two people that reads this blog post within one day of publication.

Technical stuff

I'm using the guide from Luke Smith's LandChad to set up this website. Though for email, I'm deviating a little bit by hosting it at fidei.email to support a small Catholic-run business, and to make sure that my email won't go to others' spam folders, now and in the future.

Having mentioned LandChad and fidei.email, I have to warn you that Epik's DNS dashboard is pretty troublesome. It might be too limited to integrate correctly with fidei.email, as I had problems with the autoconfig and autodiscover CNAME records. Thankfully, Michael from fidei.email team is a helpful guy, and the final solution is to use Fidei's NS instead of Epik's. (The Epik DNS dashboard becomes useless though, and you'd have to contact Michael for any DNS record changes.)

I then rented a server with Vultr and went the hardcore neckbeard UNIX route of trying to generate a static site with makefiles, shell scripts, and GNU m4. So far so good, though I have to figure out the tagging system later.

I plan to set up cgit and maybe Jitsi as well.

And sorry, no dark theme for you. If it hurts your eyes because it's nighttime, step away from your computer. Go spend your time with your family, spend some time in prayer, and go to bed early.
